| About "Alien
Sideshow" THE UFOs, or Unexpected Flying Objects will be presenting a full evening performance called "Alien Sideshow" at Backdoor Theatre in Wichita Falls, Texas on Friday August 17th at 8 pm. Combining magic, juggling, comedy, dance and live music into "New Millennium Vaudeville"*, they bring clever twists to familiar performance arts. The 6 member group has generated great reviews and a growing audience from as far away as Las Vegas and as close to home as the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. *This term was 'coined' for us by former Backdoor Theatre director Linda Bates How Did You Arrive At The 'Sideshow' Concept? Ed: Well, we actually packaged two other shows for debut at Backdoor Theatre. The first was "An Evening of Wonders" which was more or less a collection of things we were doing in our road show. Prior to this we really hadn't done many shows in Wichita Falls. We were never asked! We did lots of shows everywhere else but the ole hometown was stony quite until Linda Bates asked us if we would be willing to do a 'dark night' in Backdoor's schedule. We loved the chance to work in town, we love and support what Backdoor does in the community, and it was a chance to try out some new material for the next season. The next year we were asked again and came up with "A Night of Mystery and Mayhem" which had a darker theme in some ways and debuted things that have become favorites in our show; the ghost story, the razor blades, the short attention spanned psychic, the headline predictions, etc. This summer we were asked again and wanted to give the repeat audience something really intriguing, and the folks who have never come to one of our shows a terrible case of curiosity that can only be satisfied by getting a ticket and taking a seat inside Backdoor Theatre! As it happened, we had just made an arrangement with a retired showman from California to exhibit a single object attraction at fairs and festivals this summer and fall. Its an honest to goodness sideshow attraction. Very strange! So we decided to make the presence of the sideshow attraction the presentational theme for the new show, hence: THE UFOs present "Alien Sideshow". 2 hours of the incredible, the strange, the unexpected, the impossible and the highly unlikely! What Do You Mean A Real Sideshow Attraction? Ed: I mean that we will have a real sideshow attraction exhibit inside a tent! We have already traveled a great deal with this as a stand alone show. Its really a tremendous amount of fun and excitement. People will have the chance to see one of the strangest things they may ever see. Right there in the tent! We will have the exhibit available for people to go into during the stage show's intermission. It's a show within a show! What Is It? Ed: See! Your curiosity is already on the rise! It is a mystery, an oddity and one that will only be revealed by seeing it yourself. Let me just say that if you enjoy the strange and unusual, the unexpected, then you will love this! Let me also say that THE UFOs believe that problems need to be solved, but mysteries only experienced and enjoyed before they all disappear from our lives. What Will Be New In This Show? Ed: Several things. Actually, everyone in the cast has some new routine or element of performance this year! We are always digging into deeper character development and I'm pretty happy with the new things we have written for the different cast members. Heather, for instance has two dances in this show and they are total contrast to each other in style and tone. One is a combination dance and physical comedy piece and the other has an ominous, menacing tone. Kevin has some crazy new moves in his diabolo and flair manipulation, but is also doing some pretty hot guitar work during a couple of the musical numbers. Karen has written some great new music, and new and unusual instruments in her arsenal. Doug will present a very unusual animal act. And me, well I get to play around with some very dangerous animal traps, and show you a collection from a secret cyrptozoological museum. What's Next For THE UFOs? Ed: We have a very busy fall lined up! Beyond that we have been working with a company in Dallas on a business plan to create our own theatre in a major tourist area. Its in the funding phases now, which is very frustrating and very exciting all at the same time. Its a huge project. We are gathering key helpers for all phases of development and execution.
